ALL ABOUT HAZELNUTS
Hazelnuts are the nut of the hazel tree, native to Europe & the Caucasus Mountains. Species of hazel tree are now widespread in Africa, Asia, and North America. The edible part is within a hard outer shell that's difficult to crack.
Archaeologists have found evidence of hazelnut consumption almost 10,000 years ago. Hazelnuts were considered sacred in ancient China (2000 BC) and used in Greek medicinal recipes around 40 AD.
They resurged in popularity in 1946 when baker Pietro Ferrero invented Nutella, a chocolate-hazelnut spread. (Read more about chocolate-nut butters here!) Ferrero, the maker of Nutella and Ferrero Rocher, uses 25% of the global supply of hazelnuts.
There is a huge economic value in hazelnuts, exceeding $800 million. In the United States, 99% of hazelnuts are produced in Oregon's Willamette Valley. However this represents only 5% of the world's supply. Turkey produces 75% of the global hazelnut supply.
Hazelnuts are sometimes called "filberts" - a name which comes from St. Philbert of France. He was celebrated at the same time as the hazelnut harvest, i.e. August 20.
Hazelnut butter is a good source of fat, protein, manganese, folate, copper, selenium, vitamin A and vitamin E.

THE BEST HAZELNUT BUTTERS
JEM Chocolate Hazelnut Butter
This has a sharp, tangy taste like with milk chocolate, but still manages to have the dark, rich feel of dark chocolate! Best of both worlds. A delightfully chubby texture, though it looks gritty to the eyes. Quite sweet and an indulgent dessert, that doesn't leave you feeling TOO guilty!
[Organic, Keto, Sprouted, Vegan]
Available online and at specialty grocers.
Once Again Amore Spread Hazelnut with Cocoa & Milk
This nut butter is overall delicious - wow! Smooth with only a hint of grit. It's very sweet, and might be too sweet for some. Hazelnut is a fabulous match to chocolate and I enjoy this more than the brand’s almond version – but this actually does have a bit of almond in it! Either way I'd call it delicious & I am impressed!
[Roasted, Organic, Fair-Trade]
Available at major and specialty grocers.
Justin's Chocolate Hazelnut & Almond Butter
Delightfully thick and smooth – it feels like I’m eating a spoonful of frosting, which is extremely exciting to my inner child. It's bit more bitter, more dark than I was expecting. Could maybe do with a pinch more salt just to tone that bitterness down. Of course it is still sweet – I would describe it as a very classy, “rich” sweet that really does feel indulgent.
[Dry-Roasted, Organic]
Available online and at most major grocers.
